With the past week behind us, we take a look at player and personnel moves within the league and highlights from the weeks action.
5 Shutouts
This week was a week filled with phenomenal performances between the pipes as the on ice action provided us with a handful of blank score sheets in the thirteen games played.
Thursday night saw Rögle facing off against Timrå in what would turn out to be a great game for Rögle which ended in a 5-0 victory for the visitors from Ängelholm. Calle Clang turned aside all 31 shots he faced and came away with his first shutout of the season.
– It was very nice to tick off the zero and take three points home with us. I'm proud of the lads, we came here with a number of players gone. It has been like this for many years that juniors step up and do their job. Today we have many examples. Timrå had some chances, but we played very well, said Clang after the game.
The second shutout of the evening on Thursday came from the Växjö Lakers who faced off against Frölunda in a heavyweight matchup. It was Adam Åhman between the pipes for Växjö who turned aside all 28 shots he faced and also posted his first shutout of the season. With the win the league leaders added to their point total in the standings. They now sit six points ahead of Skellefteå with 73.
Saturday gave us a trio of shutouts and unfortunately for Timrå they were once again on the receiving end of a 5-0 game, this time against Skellefteå. Linus Söderström was not very busy during the game, but he still turned aside all 18 shots he faced for his sixth shutout of the season. With the win Skellefteå came away with their eleventh straight home victory.
Leksands matchup against the visiting Malmö Redhawks turned out to be a good game for the hometown crowd as they came away with a big 3-0 victory backstopped by a 22 save performance from Mantas Armalis. This was also an important victory for Leksand as they broke a three game losing streak.
– We have been in this situation before and know how anxiety-provoking it can be. There is joy and relief when you win. They don't have many shots on target, but the shots they do have are dangerous. Otherwise, we controlled the game for the most part throughout the match, and in the end I think we deserve the victory, said Armalis.
The final shutout of the week came in a matchup between Brynäs and Örebro. Despite Örebro being the favorites to win, it was Brynäs who would come away with the 2-0 victory. This game turned out to be a goaltender dual as both Jhonas Enroth for Örebro and Anders Lindbäck for Brynäs played well between the pipes and kept clean sheets through two periods of play. Unfortunately for Enroth he would surrender a pair of goals in the third period and Lindbäck would come with away with his second shutout of the season.
Off Ice News
Mieho
Timrå made a move in player personel this week as they have recruited 27 year old Finnish forward Panu Mieho from Ilves in Liiga. Mieho has spent his entire professional career in Finland so far and has been with Ilves for the past five seasons.
– Panu is a two-way player who can play in many positions and functions in different roles out on the ice. He is a good skater, a tough player and is good in different forms of the game. With his addition to the team, the coaches get more options to play in, among other things, powerplay, says Kimmo Kapanen
The recruitement comes on the heel of an injury to Anton Wedin who is expected to be out long term. The contract is valid until the end of next season.
Lakers
The Växjö Lakers mad a swap this week as they brought Filip Nordberg up from Södertälje and sent Amil Krupic back down. The 18 year old Nordberg was a second round pick by the Ottawa Senators in this summers NHL entry draft and will be getting his first taste of SHL action.
Amil Krupic was called up by the Lakers last season and has appeared in 17 games so far this season with the big club. However he has not produced from the blue line so far, notching just a single assist in his 17 games.
Miketinac
Färjestad has also called up a player from HockeyAllsvenskan as Kalle Miketinac has been recruited from Mora. The 23 year old forward has just a single SHL appearence in his career so far. He has spent the rest of his career in HockeyAllsvenskan.
– Kalle is a center that we think is on the border between HockeyAllsvenskan and SHL, so it will be exciting to see him in this environment. A good opportunity for both parties to get to know each other, says sports director Rickard Wallin
